GOAL: Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) Half Marathon

April17th, 2011 began an educational process that would change everything for me. Over the years I have tried different strategies of exercise & diet with mostly short-term success.  Invariably I would tire of the extreme measures it would take to attain results and revert back to a lifestyle were weight gain and lower physical fitness would return.  This all changed when I started working with Amy Walker and the FitLab Metabolic Fitness program. 

The real success came through Amy’s straight talk, balanced strategy and her fantastic coaching/motivational style.  The program and her explanations finally brought a simple logic to the balance of diet, exercise and importance of training in th e proper zone to stoke your metabolic rate. Never during the initial twelve week program did I feel like I was depriving myself or training in an unsustainable fashion.  Amy kept me focused on the balanced approach and correctly would guide me how my body would react.

The results speak for themselves. I was able to dramatically increase my metabolic rate, lose twenty pounds and gain a tremendous amount of physical fitness.  One of my stated goals when starting the program was to compete in the B.A.A. Half  Marathon this October.  With Amy’s coaching and program I was able to achieve this goal. 

The truth is, the program doesn’t ever end.  The knowledge that I have learned and my lifestyle have changed forever.   Thank  you Amy.

For the last 7 years, I have been conscious of my weight gain and the fact that it seemed to be out of my control. I tried the fad diets and lost some weight, but the problem was I couldn’t sustain it. Not only did the weight come right back but my body didn’t respond well to the drastic dietary shifts. Besides dieting, the other option was exercise so I began to run 3 days a week with still no real visible change. That’s frustrating.

I knew if I was going to lose the weight and get healthy again I would need a change in lifestyle. When Amy explained the details of Fitlab, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. Fitlab was different because there was no special food plan or unmanageable exercise program. The best part was that the metabolic testing was specific to me. It told me exactly how many calories my body burns naturally and where I burn the most calories while exercising. With this information, I could eat normally with some simple modifications on my choices or portion sizes, exercise and finally lose weight. Sounds simple, right? I like simple and that’s what it came down to… simple math. In the first few weeks of solely eating better I saw major results. Once I added in exercise the weight really came off.

I am happy to say that to date, I am down 4 pants sizes and 45 pounds. I am certain that anyone who commits to the detailed plan Fitlab provides will see results. I am living proof that there is such a thing as a sustainable healthy lifestyle change. Thanks Fitlab.

As you know, working out has always been a priority for me. Fitlab has changed not only the way I work out, but the way I think of working out. I used to go to the gym and take a class or use the ecliptical and workout for a certain amount of time. I never really knew how hard I was working. There were days I just didn’t feel like doing much and my workouts suffered.

With Fitlab, I have a program and a purpose. My heart rate tells me how hard I am working and it is a welcome distraction to monitor it. I work out longer because I feel like I have a personal trainer with me and it is enjoyable! Because you gradually increase the intensity of my workouts, I am able to sustain exercising longer without feeling fatigued. Since I have target heart rates for each exercise session, the program is goal oriented and gives immediate feedback! I am encouraged when I can workout at a heart rate that was hard for me when I started the program is easy now! I feel much stronger after doing the program for 12 weeks! Another benefit of the program is that you can do the workout anywhere. I’m no longer dependent on a class or a gym so I’ve added variety that helps keep me interested! For those who travel or have a demanding schedule that is an added benefit!

Also, I think your program would be great for anyone who has not been exercising on a regular basis. I think of my son when I say this because he will every now and then try running when he hasn’t done anything for so long! Of course, he gets frustrated and quits because it is so hard. I think people who are not used to exercising would like to get in shape if they didn’t feel like they were killing themselves trying to do something that their body is not ready for…for me, I believe FitLab is the perfect option! Just my opinion!

Over the years I made excuses about why I couldn’t lose weight. One of the big ones was that I didn’t have time with all the things I’m doing for my kid’s school, church, friends, and my family. Finally, I decided it was time to focus on me because I want to see my boys grow up and get married and be able to play with my grandchildren some day.

After 6 months on the FitLab program, I am in the best shape of my adult life. I achieved my target weight after the first couple of months, and then began to focus on the fitness aspect of the program. Because you track your heart rate to determine the effectiveness of your workout, it is easy to adjust the time and intensity of your workout to meet your objectives, whether it is weight loss, or improved fitness, or both.

The best part is that, even in class, you are working at your own level, determined by your heart rate, and improving at your own pace. No more quitting a step class after a couple of sessions because you can’t keep up with the instructor and get frustrated. Everyone in the class has an individualized plan for improvement, based on their starting condition and their objectives. I was never able to run comfortably before FitLab, but after 6 months on the program, I now run about 75% of every training session in order to reach my target heart rate, and I do it with no problem.

Amy is also a great class leader. She uses just the right amount of tough love, combined with encouragement and support, to keep you on track to meet your goals. I recommend FitLab to people all the time because it has worked so well for me.

I wanted to tell you how happy I have been with Fitlab over the past few months. As an athlete you come to realize that there are highs and lows in your training, and that you will do whatever you can to minimize the lows. You work as hard as you can, for as long as you can to achieve a goal, then one day you realize that the training you’ve been doing isn’t working anymore. You’ve peaked.

I’ve been using the same training plan for the past six years with mixed results, one year good, and one year bad…never consistent. I tried several training programs that used a heart rate monitor but without knowing a true baseline, I wasn’t sure I could trust the data or even where I should be at any given point. However, since using the Fitlab system, I’m now able to know where my heart rate should be at any point during training or a race, and how that information helps me reach the podium. Knowing where your weaknesses are aerobically as well as what your AT (anaerobic threshold) is will help maximize every minute of you’re training. This season I’ve seen my overall endurance increase, thresholds increase, and weight decrease…all while maintaining a level of performance I’ve never seen before. Fitlab has given me the opportunity to maximize my training by letting me know where my weaknesses are and how I can fix them.

They say the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over expecting different results. Don’t train another hour without knowing if what you’re doing is benefiting you.

I am a friend of Amys and actually credit FitLab to helping me lose the weight that I gained from pregnancy! I met Amy after I had my baby and became very interested in her program. Before pregnancy I considered myself ‘fit’. I ran almost every day and was really careful about what I ate. I gained 45 pounds by the end of my pregnancy and didn’t feel very good about myself and wasn’t sure how in the world I was going to lose the weight! I started walking and working out at the gym (when I could) but wasn’t seeing many results. I FINALLY talked to Amy and got the test done so that I could begin to use the heart rate monitor and exercise accordingly. My goal was to feel good and finally buy a pair of jeans (that I actually wanted to wear) by my daughter’s first birthday. Not only did I feel great at her party but I continued to follow the workouts and lost all the weight! It REALLY works if you are willing to put in the work!!

I must admit that I am a little obsessive about things, so after I got the hang of the program, I really worked hard. I was careful about what I was consuming. This program does change your view of exercise and I had to get use to not running (at first) and just trust that it was working as long as my heart rate was in the right place. Eventually I could easily run and still stay in my correct heart rate zones with no problem.

Good luck with the program!! It leads to great results if you put forth the work and stick with it!
